Is College A Waste Of Time?
What is up everyone! It's Prince back again with another one. I was going through the essay, "College Is a Waste Of Time" by Dale Stephens. There are some very good points I can agree with that were stated, but also some that I could not. One important thing Dale does have in his essay are the 4 Pillars Of Argument! Starting off with the Thesis; which is where he stated his main argument. It is simply cut and dry; the last sentence in the first paragraph of his essay(sec.1). "I believe higher education is broken"...there you go it's right there; you cant miss it.
Following his main point, Stephens continue to argue his stance by backing it up with some clear evidence; which is the 2nd Pillar of Argument! Wow look at that, we are really moving. Dale Stephens came strong with a lot of evidence in my opinion. If you look in the 3rd paragraph, 1st sentence, Stephens supports his thesis by stating that " Failure is punished instead of seen as a learning opportunity." The evidence shown is a direct correlation to his main argument. Also in the 3rd paragraph, last sentence, "College fails to empower us with the skills necessary...of today's global entrepreneurial economy." A strong piece of information Dale shared I would say. The last piece of evidence comes in the 1st sentence of the 4th paragraph, the easiest of them all, "College is expensive." Simple.
In the last 2 paragraphs are where Dale Stephens' refutes some opposing arguments. "I do not think everyone should leave college...consider the opportunity cost of going to class."(para.9 sent.2). "If you want to be a doctor...school is a wise choice."(para.9 sent.3). On the other hand, what else could you do during your 50 minute class?"(para.9 sent.4)
Dale is stating what a reader with an opposing argument would think but also giving his 2 cents gently, without being too aggressive. On the other hand, what else could you do during your 50 minute class?"(para.9 sent.4). A clear example of what was just typed in the sentence prior.
Lastly, the Conclusion of his essay; the repeat of the thesis for lesser terms. To end his essay, Dale Stephens writes, "it’s a question of priorities. We who take our education outside and beyond the classroom understand how actions build a better world."(para.10 sent.4).
Throughout the essay, Dale Stephens appeals to the readers by adding a lot of opinion and appealing t o all of the viewers who just cannot stand the fact that college is put on a pedestal as a way to guaranteed success; when in fact it has its many negatives. Dale is using his emotions and experiences to engage the reader to his essay and point of view.
